Residential Solar Incentives in California
Tax Credits and Rebates for Residential Solar Panel Installation in California
Going solar does more than decrease your monthly energy bill and increase the overall value of your home. It also in many cases comes with federal tax incentives. When you purchase and install an eligible solar system in California, for example, including the solar photovoltaic systems offered by Sun Solar – you can receive a federal investment tax credit that can cover 30% of the total cost.
Beyond this powerful federal tax credit, you may also be entitled to state and local residential solar incentives in California. The rebate and incentive amounts will vary based on your location and utility company, which is something you can discuss with one of our experienced Solar Educators. We can also walk you through the many other benefits of switching to solar and how solar works.

Scott Ryan, the owner of Sun Solar, was born and raised in the Central Valley. As a business leader in our community, he’s proud to give back to the community he calls home.
“Growing up here locally, we have a great sense of pride for our community and want to earn your business the right way. We don’t “sell” solar, we help our friends, family and customers find ways to save and make the best decision for their homes and businesses. We’re more than a solar company - we’re improving the lives of the wonderful people we call neighbors.”

We Can Help Identify Credits, Incentives, and Rebates
Make Residential Solar More Affordable
California’s commitment to clean energy has led to the implementation of several statewide credits, incentives, and rebates. The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) offers California homes a one-time, up-front rebate for installing an energy solar system, for example. Members of disadvantaged communities and low-income households who meet certain criteria may also be eligible for a one-time rebate that covers up to 100% of their solar system costs.
Solar systems tend to increase your home’s value, but you may understandably be concerned about consequent increases in property taxes that have the potential to offset energy savings. Under the Active Solar Energy Exclusion, your home’s property taxes will not increase until the end of the 2024 fiscal year if you add solar panels.
California also allows net energy metering. Put simply, you can send excess energy generated by your solar panels back to the electricity grid in exchange for credits on future utility bills. These credits can help you save money during periods of low solar power generation, including at night or during the winter.
These are just a few of the state-level residential solar incentives in California that may be available depending on your circumstances. Do not get overwhelmed or feel like you need to do extensive research to make the most of your investment! Our Solar Educators at Sun Solar are familiar with all state and local incentives and can help you take advantage of every available opportunity.
